Small black heart tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black heart sits on the side of an ankle, with a little space around it. The heart is filled in with black ink and has no shading or fine detail. The background is a dark grey textile, and the skin is lit softly from the front, with a beige canvas shoe at the bottom of the frame.

The van had died at the bottom of Scarrow Pass, so I walked the last stretch with the parcel buttoned inside my coat. It was a small brown box addressed to a Mrs Ida Hallam at the top farm, and it knocked against my ribs with every step over the drifts. Sheep watched me from the rocks with the flat patience of creatures who had seen postmen fail before.

At the cairn where the road bends, I found a boy. He was perhaps nine, crouched beside a waystone and drawing with a lump of charcoal on the grey granite. He told me the snow would wash it off by morning, and that it didn't matter, because his father had gone over the top for the strays two days back and hadn't come down. The heart he had drawn was solid and black, no bigger than a thumbprint, and he would not say who it was for.
I asked if he knew Mrs Hallam. He said she was his gran, and that he had been sent up to meet the post in case it brought his dad's wages, which it did not. I gave him the box anyway and he shook it beside his ear like a present, grinning at the rattle. Then he stood very still and pointed down the valley, where a lantern was swinging slowly through the sleet.
We walked down together, the boy ahead with the charcoal stub in his fist. When the lantern was close enough to hear boots on stone, he did not look back at the cairn. I did. The heart was already half gone under the wet, but I could still make it out, the way you always find the one mark you meant to keep.
