Semicolon tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small, solid black semicolon tattooed on the side of a finger, with the finger held up against a blurred teal background. The linework is simple and clean, with the dot and comma of the mark sharply defined and set low on the finger's side. The ink is black only, and the warm skin tones and soft background frame the small mark in the centre of the image.

Mr Thwaite kept the semicolon case locked in the drawer beneath the composing stick, and he would only unlock it when a proof came back with the wrong mark in it. Nettie had been at the Holbeck works for three weeks before she was allowed to touch the small brass tray, and she was not permitted to pick up the sorts until she could say what they were for.

"A full stop is a door shut," he said, tapping a dot of lead with his thick thumbnail. "A comma is a man pausing on the stairs. This one," and he lifted a semicolon between tweezers, its dot set above its tail like a bird that had landed on a wire, "is two sentences that have agreed to keep each other company without quarrelling."
She set a line of the mill owners' petition that night in a hurry and got it wrong, a full stop where a semicolon belonged, and Thwaite caught it in the morning with his magnifier. He did not scold. He turned the forme over, slid the bad sort out and handed her the right one. Later a letter came from her brother in Canada, eleven pages of crossings-out and hope, and she read it on the bench under the gas jet. Where he had written that he would not come home, there was a stop. Where he had written that he missed the river, there was a semicolon, and the sentence carried on, lonely and unfinished, straight into the next line of wanting.
She kept that letter in the case beside the spare semicolons, and when Thwaite died she was the one who unlocked the drawer. Nobody else in the works knew what the little mark was worth.
