Semicolon tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand held in a loose pinch, showing a small black semicolon tattooed on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the ink is a dark black. The composition is tight, with the pale pink nails and a blue and white patterned fabric filling the background.

The copy came up the stairs at ten past eleven, and Maeve Callow read it twice before she touched the pencil. The council had closed the Thornfield footbridge, the river had gone over the weir, and a man was still on the wrong side of it with his dog. Someone upstairs had cut the middle out of the sentence to make the page fit, and what was left read like a door shut on a room with the lights still on.

Her old editor, Dennis Pragg, had a rule pinned above the sink in the subs' kitchen: stops are for finished things. He had bled red ink over every dash she ever wrote and never once touched a semicolon, because, he said, a semicolon was a promise to keep talking. She put one back now, between the man and the bridge, and drew a line through the full stop the night desk had added out of habit.
The presses started at half past one. Outside the window the rain had turned the car park into a mirror, and the streetlamps lay in it like dropped coins. At two the duty reporter rang to say the man had walked the dog across the top of the weir and come out on the far bank, cold and furious and alive. The sentence still wanted an ending, and nobody had written one yet.
Maeve sent the page down unfinished, which she had never done before, and went home with the proof folded in her coat. In the morning the paper ran the story with its pause intact, a small dark mark holding two halves of a night that had not yet decided how it would end.
