Fine line black treble clef tattoo, small and simple, on the inside of a person's wrist.

Small treble clef on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A very small treble clef is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in solid black ink with thin, even linework. The clef sits near the centre of the frame against plain pale skin, with a grey sleeve and part of a dark laptop keyboard visible in the background.

Sit down, the kettle's not boiled, and you'll have to forgive the draught, it's been coming under that door since the year the pier fell in. Now listen, because I'll not tell it twice.

Sixty winters back there was a lodger in the back room at Gull's Rest, a piano tuner called Arthur Venn, who arrived with a leather case and a cough and never once let the parlour upright go out of tune. Every morning he sat at it with his ear pressed to the wood, tapping the same note until it stopped arguing with him. My mother said he was the only man in Saltcombe who could hear that the sea was a little flat.

He drew the clef for me on the back of a coal bill, one slow curl with a loop at the bottom, the way you'd draw a question you already knew the answer to. He said a clef was a promise about where the notes would sit on the stave. Then he walked out one February morning to tune the chapel organ and never came back for the rest of his rent.

The coal bill is still in the drawer under the stairs. I only ever learned his first name, and the sea took the chapel in '58, so there's nothing left to check. But every time the wind comes round the headland and the windows hum, I hear that low loop he drew, the one that tells you where the rest of the tune is meant to go. Mind your cup, love. It's hot.
