Anchor and infinity symbol on a hip
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a small tattoo showing an anchor with its shank looped through an infinity symbol. The linework is solid black with smooth, even edges and no visible shading. The tattoo sits on bare skin against a plain, softly lit background, with the top edge of black underwear visible above it.

Dear Tom,

The new chain came off the lorry this morning and Mr Pryce had me scrape the old shackle before he'd sign for it. I told him it was Dad's pin, the one with the notch filed into it, and he said a pin is a pin. I kept it in my pocket all the way down the quay anyway. You'll laugh, but I've been turning it over the way Dad used to turn his pipe when he was working out a sum.
The harbour office has put the Maid of Cleethorpes back on the slip, so she'll be out past the breakwater by the time this reaches you. Her anchor was dragged clean through the mud off Spurn last winter and the bitter end had frayed to nothing. Mr Pryce says it's the same cable we'd have used in '79, only longer, which is his way of saying nothing has changed here except the people.
Mum asked after you again. She keeps the calendar on the kitchen wall and crosses off the days in pencil, then rubs them out when she thinks I'm not looking, and crosses them again. I've stopped correcting her.
I went down to the slip last night and looped a spare length of line through the eye of the old anchor, the way Dad taught us, the figure of eight that never gets to the end. It holds. It always holds. Come home and I'll show you.
Love, Sam
