The bandleader never paid in cash on a Thursday, so Mrs Pell paid in tickets instead, little pink stubs for the Marlow Palais that you could trade for a ginger beer or a dance with Ivy Crane. I was fourteen and kept the box under the cloakroom counter, and that was where Dennis Haig first drew the unicorn for me, on the back of a stub, with a chewed biro that skipped on every curl of the mane.

He said it was the only animal he could draw without getting the legs wrong. Four legs, he said, and you cheat with the hooves. He wanted to be a sign-painter like his uncle in Ramsgate, and he practised on everything: the lamp post outside the fish shop, the back of my hand when the band was tuning up and nobody was watching. The horn was the hardest bit. He did it three times before it sat right, pointing forward as if it had somewhere to be.

That summer the dancing stopped being a thing we did for money and became the thing we did to keep out of the rain. Ivy married a lifeguard in September. The Palais shut its doors in October with a notice about the roof. Dennis took the Canterbury bus without saying goodbye, but he had left the stub on my counter with the unicorn facing the door.

I still keep it in a biscuit tin with the ration books and my mother's bingo pencil. Most nights I take it out and count the legs. Four, always four, though he would have said I was counting the cheat.
