The snow had been falling since Tuesday, and by Thursday the road over the moor was a white nothing even the postman had given up on. Maud counted the guests the way her grandmother had taught her to count spoons: four in the upstairs rooms, two in the back parlour playing cards for matches, and the surveyor from Hexham who had paid in advance and then spent most of his time glaring at the sky through the landing window.

Her father kept the kitchen fire banked and the ledger open. On the third evening she carried the lamp up the stairs and found the surveyor's door ajar, a draught lifting the curtain. He had gone down for supper. On the cold glass of the landing window someone had drawn a heart in the condensation, a single unbroken line, the way a child might draw one in sand with a stick. Not the surveyor's work, she thought. He drew like a man filling in a form. The line wavered at the top where a hand had paused, then closed neatly at the point.

Maud stood there with the lamp hissing and wondered who had been looking out at the snow and thinking of someone far down the valley. She did not wipe it away. Instead she set the lamp on the sill so its light fell through the glass and turned the heart gold on the white field outside.

When the thaw came, the plough came first, then the postman, then a letter addressed to the inn in a hand she did not know. Inside was a single line of ink, unsigned, in the same shaky curve: Meet me where the road forks. She folded it and tucked it into the ledger between the pages for February.
