Hammerhead shark behind the ear
Realism · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small hammerhead shark is tattooed on the side of the neck, curving below and behind the ear, with its wide head and pectoral fins clearly shown. The shading is soft and grey, with darker edges on the fins and body that give the shark some depth. The close crop shows the ear with two hoop earrings and long brown hair on the right, with no face visible.

The hammerhead came into Porthmellin Bay on the third tide after the gale, and Old Tamsin said it had come looking for her nephew's boat, because it had been circling the harbour wall since the spring. Nobody argued with her. Ivo had taken the Gull out past the Carrack rocks in March and the sea had kept the boat, though it had given back his oilskin cap on the sand at Trevose, folded as neatly as a letter.

The children on the slipway counted its eyes. Their father said a shark that wide in the bay was a bad omen and sent for the harpoon. Tamsin walked down anyway with a bucket of pilchards and sat on the cold stone with her boots in the wash. The shark came close enough that she could see the grey freckling on its head and a length of blue rope knotted behind one fin, trailing like a ribbon from a parcel.
She talked to it the way she talked to the gulls, plainly and without fuss, about the price of paraffin and whose cow had got into the chapel. On the fourth circuit it turned side on and rolled, and she saw the rope was caught fast around its wide head. Her grandson Pell waded out to his waist with a knife, and the shark held still for him as if it had been waiting all winter for someone to be sensible.
When the rope fell away, a brass compass sank slowly through the green water and settled in the sand at Tamsin's feet. The needle still swung. The shark went out past the Carrack rocks, rolling once so its pale belly caught the light, and Tamsin put the compass in her apron pocket and went up the hill to set the kettle on.
