Small fine line squiggle on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown palm up against a dark background, with a small black tattoo on the inner wrist. The tattoo is a thin, unshaded abstract mark made of a wavy line, a loop and a single dot. The photograph is warm toned and the skin and ink are clearly visible, with the tattoo placed off centre near the wrist crease.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came to Hollin Bottom the week the river dropped, and the first thing anyone noticed was that the boy who ran the swingboats had lost his dot. He had kept it in a tobacco tin with the spare bolts, a single black stamp pressed onto his wrist each morning by the old showman, and somewhere between Ludlow and the flat fields it had worn away. Ada Pennock, who sold toffee apples from the back of a cart, said a dot was a small thing to lose. The boy said that depended on what it was meant to stop.

Tobias Vane told him the story the way his own gran had told it. The wavy line was the road you walk, wavy because no road runs straight. The loop was the ground you keep coming back to, the field with the generator and the cart. The dot was the one mark you make so you know where you stopped. Without it the loop just goes round, and the line goes on and on, and a man can ride the big wheel all night and never once climb down.

They searched the field until the lamps were lit. Ada found the dot in a puddle beside the generator, shining like a cat's eye under the oil. She didn't pick it up with her fingers. She knelt, wet her thumb on her tongue, and pressed the little drop back onto the boy's wrist, just where the line finished.

On Sunday they struck the tents and the wheel came down in sections. The boy sat up on the cab of the lorry with his sleeve pushed back, looking at the mark, and when the bridge came up he said the road was still there, only now he could tell where it stopped.
