Mrs Pryce wants forty yards of midnight silk by Saturday for the Whitsun dance, and I cannot find a single spool that doesn't smell of the river.

The only good thing this week was a customer who came to the counter with a bow she had stitched onto a cardigan years ago. The loops had gone flat from the damp and she asked whether I could make it stand up again. I steamed it over the kettle, pinched each loop back into shape with my fingernails, and let the tails fall the way a ribbon falls when nobody is watching it. She paid in coppers and a horn button, and then she asked me to stop fussing over it, because it was only a bow.

I kept the spare tail she left on the counter, the thin grey one, and pinned it above the till where the light from the awning catches it. Mrs Pryce says it looks like a moth that has given up flying, which is unkind but not entirely wrong.

Come home Sunday if the weather lets up. Bring the good scissors and the tin with the broken clasp. Tell your mother the pitch is still standing, though the awning is not. Love, Rosa.
