Heart and infinity line tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is intertwined with a looping infinity line, with two tiny dots beside the upper right edge of the heart. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits on the side of the ankle against pale skin, with a black leather shoe and a blurred background.

The relay room at Ormsby Head smelled of hot varnish and wet wool, and at a quarter past eleven the sounder began to chatter the way it always did before a blow. I was nineteen and the only night operator who could take the fast Morse without moving her lips. Frank Tarrant, the stationmaster's son, sent me a message most nights, and it was always about the weather and nothing else.

That Tuesday he sent nothing. I waited through the tide tables and the Liverpool rates, my pencil tapping, until the line went dead for a full minute and came back with two short taps and a pause. Dot, dot. No one in the Post Office used that. It was what we did in the boat shed when we were children, to say I am still here without making a word of it.
I wrote back, but I could not think what to say, so I drew the only shape I trusted on the back of the log sheet: a heart with a loop running through it, like the figure of eight the cable made when it was coiled on the deck. Two specks of ink went up beside the top curve, because my hand slipped and then I decided they belonged there. The next morning a boy on a bicycle brought his reply. The ship was recalled to Hull, and he had asked for a transfer to the land station at Whitby, so the wire between us would be shorter.
We were married the spring after, in the chapel above the harbour. I still have that log sheet. The loop is pressed so hard into the paper the pencil went through to the next page, and beside it, in his square capitals, he had written two dots and a full stop.
