Semicolon and live on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black script tattoo on the inner wrist, showing a semicolon followed by the word live. The linework is thin and even, with a light, smooth flow across the lettering. The photo is taken straight on against a pale skin tone and a soft beige background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Rain drummed on the tarpaulin above Ada's stall and ran off the corner of the awning in a steady rope onto the cobbles. She had sold two rulers and a tin of brass drawing pins since eleven. The box at her feet held old lead type that her brother had carried home from a print works in Leeds before it closed, and she was sorting it by shape because sorting gave her hands something to do.

A woman in a yellow mac stopped at the trestle and picked up a semicolon, turning it under the grey light until the nick in its base showed. "Printers used to throw these out first," she said. "Nobody needed the pause." Ada said her brother had kept every one and never explained why. The woman laughed and said she had a poster to set for the library's winter talks, and she needed the word that came after the mark.
Ada went through the tray without looking, her fingers finding the letters by weight alone. L, I, V, E, lined up in a row on the cloth beside the semicolon. The woman didn't say anything. The rain thinned to a drizzle, and somewhere near the fishmonger a dog barked twice and gave up.
"That's the one," the woman said, paying in coins still warm from her pocket. When she had gone, Ada wiped the lead with a rag, locked the forme and pulled a proof. The ink sat dark and even on the paper, the dot of the semicolon hanging over the line like a breath taken before the sentence carried on.
