Small butterfly tattoo on a foot
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small butterfly with open wings sits on the top of a bare foot, shown in side view with the toes visible. The wings have dark outlines and fine detail, with blue and pale yellow areas and soft grey shading beneath the body. The butterfly is placed near the centre of the frame against a dark textured surface, with a silver ring on one toe.

It was a small thing, no bigger than a fingernail, with wings the blue of a mended net and a rim of pale yellow like sun through wet glass. It walked across the wet lacquer as if it had been invited. Maud sat back on her stool and watched it open and close, open and close, and she thought about her brother Tom, who had sailed for Newfoundland the year the herring failed and never written.
She left it. By noon the varnish had set and the butterfly was fixed to the brass, wings spread, one feeler bent. Mr Vosper from the chandlery came down to see the lanterns hung and frowned at the small blue shape. 'That's a mistake, Maud,' he said. 'Nothing flies over the water in this weather.'
She lit the lamp that night anyway. The light came through the coloured glass and threw the butterfly's shadow across the slipway, wide and dark, and for the first time Maud could see it was not stuck to anything at all. It was simply resting on the air, waiting for her to look up.
