Maud had counted the footprints twice before the frost lifted, and both times there were the same number, small and bare, pressed into the rime on the outer ward of Harrowgate Keep. Her father was still down at the byre with the ewes. She knelt by the first print and felt the cold soak through her stockings.

They went up the curtain wall, over the fallen lintel where the ivy grew thickest, and stopped at the arrow-slit where the sun first came over the Cheviots. Beside the last print someone had left two long smudges in the frost, fanned at the edges, as if a bird had settled there and risen again. Maud had seen gulls do that on the mudflats below, pressing their wings into the sand before they lifted off.

Her grandmother had always said the keep kept things. Dropped buttons, dropped names, the warmth of a hand left on cold stone. Maud set her own boot beside the smallest print and it was too big by a finger's width. She laughed, then stopped, because the laugh went up into the stone and came back to her softer than she had sent it.

By noon the frost had gone and the prints were only darker patches in the moss. She did not tell her father. She sat on the sill with her boots off, and when she stood up the grass where she had been sitting had flattened into two long shapes, like wings, already springing back up.
