Small sun tattoo on the side of the ribs

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long, highlighted hair that covers her face stands side-on against a grey wooden wall, wearing a pastel tie-dye vest top. A small black sun with a face sits on her side near the ribs, drawn with simple outlines and light shading. The palette is mostly soft pastels and the tattoo is the only ink visible, with white and yellow daisy clips in her hair.

Dear Maud,

The sun on the Ardent Mary's bow has faded to a grin, and Captain Orr says he won't pay for a new one while the fish are running thin. I told him paint was cheaper than a month of grumbling, so I've been up the ladder since six with a tin of ochre and your old brush with the split ferrule.

Mind you, the face is harder than you'd think. Everyone expects a sun to be round and cheerful, but the eyebrows keep wanting to go sad. Yesterday I got the mouth right on the third try, and Dougie from the galley came out to say it looked like it had just heard a good joke. I told him the sun has heard every joke on this coast and laughed at most of them.

Here's the odd part. Under the old paint I found the original outline scratched into the wood with a nail, the same crooked rays, the same little dot for an eye. Somebody before us drew it in a hurry, and somebody before them copied it. So I kept the nail marks, drew my lines over the top, and left the scratches showing where the wood wouldn't take the new coat.

Tell Ruth the kettle is still on the left hook, and that I haven't burned the biscuits this week. The sun goes up tomorrow morning, weather permitting, and if it comes out right I'll leave the ladder against the galley wall so you can climb up and see it for yourself.

Yours, Nell
