Small crescent moon with a face on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon with a simple face in profile, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. It sits on the lower leg just above the ankle, beside a rolled denim cuff and wet skin, with sea foam and sand behind it. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, and the palette is black ink against natural skin tones and blue denim.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide had already turned when Mags pushed the skiff off the slipway without a lamp, and you were the only one on the harbour wall to see the oars go quiet. Ada, who mended nets on the bottom step and had not spoken since noon, said the moon would tell you where she had gone if you asked it properly. You thought she was mad. You also went home for the tin of matches anyway.

Back on the wall, the sky was thin and grey, the crescent low over the breakwater like a bitten biscuit, its small profile turned towards the open sea. You held a match to the lantern and the wind took it. You tried again. Ada had told you the moon liked to be looked at straight on, so you stood with your back to the lighthouse and your face to the sky and waited, the cold working up through your boots, the gulls quarrelling over the fish boxes.

It was the tide that brought the boat back, not the moon, and Mags was not in it. Only the oars, lashed together, knocking against the stones like someone wanting in. You sat down on the wet steps beside Ada and she handed you the net needle without looking up. 'Tell it you're still waiting,' she said. 'It keeps the count.' Out past the breakwater the crescent slid under a bank of cloud, and the harbour went dark except for the lantern you had finally got lit.
