Sunburst circle on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a plain circle surrounded by short, evenly spaced radiating lines, like a sun or sunburst. The lines are fine and black with solid, even ink, and the centre is left as untouched skin. The arm is photographed from above, raised hand at the top of the frame, on a crumpled white sheet with soft, even light.

He'd been up since four, he said, watching the sun come over the Spa. Every morning this month he's come back complaining that the light gets into the front room before anyone's awake to enjoy it, and then it's gone behind the cliff. So he's drawn himself a sun. Mrs Holroyd in number four wants it painted over before the Whit weekend. I've told her it's a sort of clock, which is near enough. Every guest who comes down the stairs now stops and stares at the bare centre and says something about the time. Nobody has got it right yet.

Last night I climbed onto the stool and held the lamp close. I could see the tiny pinpricks where his compass had gone round the first ring. I didn't have the heart to rub it out. Ever yours, Vera.
