Small crescent moon with a face on the leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon with a drawn face sits on the lower leg, below a rolled denim cuff. It is outlined in thin black linework with no shading, and the moon's features are simply drawn. The tattoo is centred on a light background of snow or foam, with water droplets on the skin.

Dear Nell,

The mirror ball went up again on Thursday and the new fellow on the drums couldn't keep time to save his life, so Mr Haskett sacked him and took the stage himself with a cornet he can barely hold. You'd laugh. Half the town came out for it, mostly for the free sherry. I have been sweeping up glitter since eleven and my back is singing.
Something odd happened after the last waltz. I was counting chairs by the side door when I saw the crescent moon painted over the arch, the one your mother said was too cheerful for a church hall. Its painted face had slipped sideways, like a man leaning in to hear a secret. I thought it was the paraffin lamps. Then I saw that the chalk marks on the floorboards, the ones we use for the Lancers, had been rubbed out in a neat half-circle, as if someone had danced there in the dark and kept to the edge of the light.
I asked Haskett about it this morning. He only said the moon had always had a cheeky face and it was the sea air that made the paint run. Then he handed me the tin of silver paint and told me to touch up the chin, which I did, though I left the eyes alone. They looked back at me as if they'd rather I didn't.
Come home at Christmas if the trains run. Bring that wool coat you hate. I'll save you the last dance on the pier.
Love, Bea
