Small crescent moon on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare ankle and lower leg resting on white blankets. A small crescent moon is drawn in a single thin black outline on the outer ankle. The shading is minimal, the background is soft and out of focus, and the tattoo sits near the centre-right of the frame.

The barrier at Lasko Ford lifted at twenty past two, and Marta Orel logged the car without looking up. Above the poplars on the far bank hung a thin paring of moon, the kind her sister said was bad luck to count. Marta had stopped arguing about it years ago. Counting was what the night shift was for.

The driver passed over a passport with a cracked cover and a letter folded into quarters. Marta unfolded it under the desk lamp. It was addressed to a cousin in Veleni, a village she had driven through once, where the bakery shut at noon and the church bell rang a half-note flat. The postmark was the wrong year, but nothing in the letter was forbidden, only old.
"The cousin has moved to the coast," the driver said, before she could ask. "The wedding was postponed twice. We are going anyway, to see the hills." Marta nodded and stamped the passport. Then she read the village name aloud, the way she had been trained, and something caught. Her grandmother had written that name on the inside of a tin lid, in pencil, beside a small drawing of a crescent. It was the only map she had ever kept.
She slid the passport back through the slot and did not reach for the stamp again. Instead she took the logbook, found the line for the car, and drew a small crescent in the margin, thin and careful. Her grandmother had marked her nights that way, a moon for every night the road was safe to walk. The barrier rose. The car rolled over the bridge, its tail lights shrinking towards the hills, and the moon above the poplars grew, by a sliver, into the dark.
