Peacock feather with script on the abdomen
Other · Colour · Photo
A multicoloured peacock feather with a green, teal and orange eye sits on the side of the lower abdomen, with the words Let it be in black script beneath it. The feather has detailed, shaded linework and vivid colour, and the script is a clean black line. The close crop shows the torso and a patterned bikini strap, with no face visible.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the embers. My grandmother's grandmother swore this happened in the hill town of Sardis, back when the wells ran sweet and the peacocks walked the palace terraces as if they had paid for the stones. The gardener there had a son called Oren, and Oren could never leave a bright thing alone.

One morning, sweeping the steps, he found a long feather lying across the marble, and he could not resist. He tucked it into his belt and carried it home. That night the feather's eye opened in the dark of his room, green at the rim, then teal, then a deep copper that burned like a coal. Every time he tried to burn the feather in the hearth, it simply would not catch. Every time he tried to throw it in the river, it floated back up to his doorstep, dry as bread. Each night the eye grew wider, and Oren grew thinner, until his mother took him by the ear to the old washerwoman who lived under the bridge.
Miriam took one look at the feather and laughed until she wheezed. She told him to walk it back up to the terrace at dusk, lay it down where he found it, and say to the bird the only thing she had ever said to a grieving or greedy man: let it be. So Oren climbed the steps with his heart knocking, set the feather on the marble, and turned away without looking back. Behind him he heard the soft rattle of a tail being fanned out to the evening, and then nothing at all.
That is why, when the peacocks spread their trains at sunset, the eyes in their feathers open for a breath and close again, and why the boys of Sardis still walk the steps with their hands in their pockets. Now bank that fire, and go home before the moon comes up and starts looking for you.
