Small Darth Vader tattoo holding a red lightsaber, shown in brown and grey ink on the forearm.

Small Darth Vader with red lightsaber

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small figure of Darth Vader in his helmet and cape stands on the skin, holding a lightsaber with a red blade running up beside him. The figure is rendered in brown-grey shading with fine outlines and soft tonal fills. The red lightsaber stands out against the pale skin, and the tattoo sits centred in a close, slightly angled shot.

Dear Tom,

The hall projector finally gave up on Thursday, halfway through the reel, so we sat in the dark with the wind leaning on the shutters and Mrs Affleck's dog asleep across my feet. Old Callum Reid went round the back and fiddled with the bulb housing until a brown light came up on the sheet, and in it the black-helmeted man stood with his cape hanging down like wet tar, turning slowly to face us. Nobody spoke. Eleven grown islanders holding their breath over a bedsheet with a hum in it.

Your nephew Euan has taken the whole thing to heart. He's been going along the harbour wall with a length of red-painted broom handle, switching it on with a noise he makes through his teeth, and yesterday he cornered the ferryman and asked him very seriously whether a sword could be made of light if you believed hard enough. Ferguson said he'd have to ask the sea. Euan said the sea was no help at all.

I sat on the wall with him after and thought about your letter from the mainland, how you wrote that the city lights never switch off. Here the lamp at the point turns every twelve seconds whether anyone is watching or not. I've started counting its turns for company, and some nights I lose track and start again.

The projector is mended now, Callum says. Come home for the next one and bring your own dark.

Love, Morag
