Dear Marguerite, the weather up here has turned the way you said it would, all at once and without apology. The bus from Kirkby left me at the bottom of the pass with a sack of tinned peaches and a map Bram drew for me on the back of a feed bill, and I have been walking since seven with the wind pushing at my left shoulder like a dog that wants its ball back.

You will laugh, but I have started drawing again. Not the careful stuff you taught me, the lines that keep their promises. These are quick and crooked. Last night at the hut I sketched the word on the flap of my notebook, WILD, half-sized and leaning hard to the right, and above it two little strokes of sunset like someone had sneezed light onto the page. Old Tomas saw it over my shoulder and said the word was the only honest thing he'd read all winter. I told him it was a promise to myself and he said promises were for people who had somewhere to be.

I am writing from the ridge, where the stones are warm and the valley below is full of cloud like milk in a saucer. I have decided I will not come down the easy side. I will come down whichever way the goats went, and if I fall, you may tell everyone I was drawing at the time.

Keep the kettle on. I will bring you a sprig of something blue that refuses to grow anywhere sensible.
