Red cartoon character tattoo on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A bold cartoon character with red skin, heavy black outlines, half-closed eyes and a dark mouth fills the top of the foot, with its rounded head sitting above the toes. The red is solid with a speckled texture, and black fills the mouth area. The foot rests on a light textured cloth, with the toes and ankle visible in the frame.

You have been sulking on the bottom of Gannet Rock for three weeks, ever since Dessa Pengelly's boy dropped a crab line on your head and called you a disappointment. The keeper up in the lighthouse, a man called Ferris who talks to the gulls, has started leaving mackerel heads on the ledge for you. You eat them without interest. Your eyes are the heavy-lidded sort that make everything look like a wet Tuesday, and the sun glare off the water only makes them droop further.

Ferris climbs down on the Thursday with a bucket and a face like wet slate. The Board man from Penzance is coming on Monday to switch the lamp to automatic, he says, and the rock will be empty. Nobody will be left to feed a lobster with opinions. He tips the bucket. The heads slide out, one of them lands on your shell, and for the first time in your life you notice how much of the sea lies beyond the pot, and how little of it you have bothered to look at.
So you walk. It takes two tides and most of a night. You go past the crab boats, under the chip shop's dripping gutter, and up the harbour wall with the tide at your back, pausing every few yards to complain to yourself. At the top of the lighthouse steps, Ferris is waiting with the door propped open and a flask of tea going cold on the rail.
He doesn't say anything. He just stands aside. The lamp room is warm and smells of paraffin and gull feathers, and the great lens is already turning, throwing its slow white bars across the bay. You settle beside the brass rail, half shut eyes on the horizon, and decide that for a creature built for the dark, this is a fairly good place to watch the light come on.
