Sit yourself nearer the range, love, because this takes as long as the kettle. Mrs Ivy Dunmore kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Row, and the summer the Harrow girls came up from Leeds there was a brown terrier under the back stairs called Tansy. She had a white blaze over one eye, as if someone had flicked a brush at her and missed the rest, and she would come out for nobody but the postman.

The younger Harrow girl, Winnie, drew Tansy on the backs of the laundry lists with a pencil stub she kept behind her ear. Every drawing came out with the ears too round and the face too serious, and her sister Edie said she was wasting good paper on a dog that wouldn't sit still for a minute. Then one evening in August Tansy went off over the headland after a gull and didn't come back for supper, and Winnie went out with the lantern from the hall.

She found the dog at dusk by the wall of the old coastguard hut, sitting in a ring of blue cornflowers and pink sea thrift, as neat as if she'd arranged them herself. Winnie didn't carry her home straight away. She sat on the wall with her till the tide turned, drawing by lantern light, and when they came in at last Edie was waiting with her hands on her hips. Winnie showed her the sketch. Edie said nothing at all, but the drawing went up over the register by morning, and every September after, somebody in that house found a cornflower pressed flat in the back stairs, and nobody would own up to putting it there.
