Floral wreath with monogram on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo on the forearm shows a circular wreath of pink roses, a small blue flower and green leaves surrounding a stylised monogram in blue-grey lettering. The linework is dark and defined, with soft shading in the petals and leaves. The colour is concentrated in the flowers, and the wreath sits centred on the arm against a blurred background.

The roses on Nell's boat were meant to be painted by her uncle, but he died in the spring the lock keepers at Foxton changed hands, and so I was left with a tin of red lead, three sable brushes and the half-finished letters he had scratched onto the cabin doors. Nobody on the Grand Union believed a girl from Stoke could manage a roundel. I did it anyway, one wreath over the doors, pink roses packed close, a single blue flower tucked where the eye wanted to rest.

While I worked the paint dried faster than I liked, so I learned to shade the petals in the cool of the early morning. Old Tom Wrenfield leaned on the lock beam with his pipe and said roses were for people who meant to stay, and blue was for people who had already gone. I told him to mind his own bilge pump. He only laughed and went to open the gates.
That night I found my uncle's sketchbook wedged behind the stove. On the last page he had drawn the same wreath, with three roses and a space for a fourth, and beside it a note in pencil: for whoever comes after. I sat with the book on my knees until the kettle boiled dry. Then I took the brush and painted the fourth rose, small and pale, the colour of the lead dust on my thumb.
In the morning we went down through the locks, the gates groaning open one after another. The wreath caught the light on the water, the blue flower trembling as the boat rose, and for a moment the letters on the cabin looked like they had always belonged there.
