Small dragon-like tattoo on the hip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a woman in a turquoise patterned bikini with a navel piercing, against a blurred pool background. A small black dragon-like tattoo sits on the lower abdomen, just above the waistband of the bottoms, with solid dark ink and simple outlines. The image is mostly skin and swimwear, and the tattoo is the only ink visible.

Brother Aldric to Prior Osric, at the house of St Wulfstan, Michaelmas.

Reverend Father, you asked me to set down how the black dragon came to be in our scriptorium, and I will, though I expect you will think me foolish. It began with the ink. Brother Piers had mixed lamp-soot with oak gall for the great psalter, and one evening he left the pot uncovered on the sill above the millpond. By morning a creature no longer than my thumb was curled in the dried crust at the rim, its tail wound round the lip as if it had been waiting for the lid to come off.

Piers scraped it away with his knife. The next morning it was back, a little larger, drawn in the margin of the Compline hymn in strokes so fine that nobody could say which of us had made them. Brother Hugh wanted the page cut out and burned. Brother Piers said nothing, but he began leaving a dish of milk beside the pot each night, and he stopped complaining about the cold in the north cloister. The dragon drank it. I saw the level go down.

So I will tell you what I have decided, Father, and you may punish me for it when you visit. Tonight I have left the lid off the pot. The dragon is already at work on the initial of the Magnificat, and the gold leaf on that page is not yet dry. I find that I do not wish to stop it. Come and see the work in the spring, before the damp gets to it. I think you will agree that nothing we painted this year is half so alive.

Your servant in Christ, Aldric
