Wing and mandala tattoos on a woman at the beach
Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a bikini is photographed from the waist down and her face is not shown, so the frame focuses on her tattoos. A dark wing outline sits across the side of her ribs, with shaded feathers, and a larger ornamental mandala covers her wrist and the back of her hand. Small script runs down her hip in black ink, and the pale, sunlit sea behind her gives the image a soft, bright composition.

The veil arrives at half past six, folded in tissue that smells of camphor, and you are the one who has to unpick the old hem before Margit can even see it. Your fingers know this work better than your head does. Nineteen years at the bench above the chip shop on Wharf Street have taught you that lace forgives nothing and remembers everything.

The bride wants the mandala worked into the border, a ring of eight-petalled rosettes you draw out on squared paper the night before. Her mother wants wings. Not literal ones, she says, just something that lifts. So you stitch a pair no longer than a thumbnail into the left corner, so fine they only show when the light comes low through the workshop window, and you tell yourself nobody will look that hard.
At eleven the car pulls up outside and the bride comes in ahead of her train, laughing at her own nerves. She holds out her wrist, where a brass bangle has left a faint green mark, and asks whether the stitches will catch on her skin. You say no. You say it the way your mother said it to you across a kitchen table, and it is only half a lie.
When the dress is on, you kneel and smooth the back panel flat. The wings sit where you hoped, one turning toward the other. Her father reads the church clock from the doorway and says it's time, and you stand, brush the thread from your knees, and let the door swing shut behind you before anyone can thank you.
