Small dragonfly on the inner wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small dragonfly is tattooed on the inner wrist, with a slender black body and four delicate outlined wings spread horizontally. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, with a slightly soft, slightly blurred edge in places. The image is in black ink only, set against a dark blurred background with the hand angled across the frame.

The tarpaulin over Stall Nine had already sagged twice, and Nell was on her knees in the wet gravel, feeling for the brass dragonfly that had skittered off the velvet tray when the gust came through the market on Harrow Lane.

Rain came sideways off the cathedral roof. Men hurried past with cardboard boxes held over their heads, and nobody stopped. A boy in a yellow cagoule crouched beside her, his hood dripping onto his nose, and held the pin up between finger and thumb as if it were a wasp he did not want to crush. 'Yours?' he asked. 'It was my gran's,' she said, which was not quite true. She had bought it off a dealer in Bradford for eleven pounds because the wings were so thin she could see the lamp through them.

He turned it over. 'Doesn't look like it'd fly.' 'They don't need to go far,' Nell said. 'Only over the water and back.' Her stall had stood on the same square for nineteen years, and she had never once seen a dragonfly in the market, though the canal ran just behind the bins. Maybe that was the point of the thing: a small, precise object you could carry to a place where nothing with wings ever came.

He wouldn't take it back, and she wouldn't take his coins. She pinned it to the collar of his cagoule instead, where it caught the light between the rain, and watched him run towards the canal, the yellow hood bobbing, until the stalls swallowed him whole.
