Small fine line swallow on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small swallow in flight is drawn in thin black linework, with its wings raised and forked tail angled down to the right. The lines are light and even, with no shading beyond a few inner strokes on the wings. The pale skin, grey top and black and white chevron background keep the focus on the small bird.

The swallow was still in the taproom rafters when the snow shut the pass road, and my mother said it would be dead by Candlemas, the way they always were when a late brood refused to leave. I didn't believe her. I'd watched it all autumn, sliding under the eaves of the stable block and dropping to the water trough as if it had an appointment with the frost.

The guests that week were a surveyor from Kendal, two sisters who argued over a chess set, and a man named Harold Vane who came in each evening with a flask of brandy and a question he never quite asked. Harold was the one who noticed the bird had stopped flying. It sat on the lamp bracket above the hearth with its feathers puffed, its forked tail hanging like a dropped ribbon.
On the last night of the blizzard I carried it down the back stairs in my cupped hands, through the scullery and out into the yard, where the drifts had climbed to the sill. The sky had cleared to a hard blue. I opened my fingers, and the swallow lifted with its wings bent into that quick, sharp angle, dropped low over the frozen trough, then rose and turned south as if it had only been resting on a long journey.
Harold was waiting at the kitchen door with the brandy. He didn't ask where it had gone. He poured two cups and said the thaw would come early this year. When it did, a single feather was frozen to the rim of the trough, black and thin as a stroke of ink, and I kept it in the drawer with the room keys.
