Small elephant and birds on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant facing right with its trunk raised sits on the skin, with a line of five simple bird silhouettes rising from the tip of the trunk. The elephant is outlined in fine black linework with soft grey and pale blue shading, and a small dark dot marks the eye. The tattoo is centred on a close crop of the upper back, with the skin tone and a blurred background filling the rest of the frame.

Ottilie Haskew was driving it, and she had nothing aboard but a crate of oranges and a baby elephant called Pim, who had been sold to a travelling fair and was not happy about it. Pim stopped walking at noon. He stood in the heat with his ears hanging like wet washing and would not take another step, so Ottilie got down, took the bucket from under the seat, and sat beside him on the warm sand to wait for the evening.
Toward dusk the swifts came low over the flats, dozens of them, the way they do before rain that never arrives. Pim lifted his trunk to them, slow and grave, the way a man lifts his hat. The birds peeled off one at a time and turned in the last light, and Ottilie always swore they rose from the very tip of that trunk, five of them in a line, as if the old fellow had been holding them there all along.
Pim walked on at first light. Nobody on that road got a drop of rain that week, but the oranges were sweet, and the next town was called Hope, which I have always thought was cheek on their part. That is all. Pass the biscuits along.
