Outline elephant with green leaf on foot

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon elephant facing left is drawn in a single black outline, with its trunk raised and curling toward a small leaf filled in green at the tip. The linework is even and clean, with no shading, and the only colour is the green leaf. The tattoo sits on the top of the foot, shown against plain skin with a little pink fabric at the lower edge of the frame.

The ledger says the elephant came in on a Tuesday, folded inside a postcard addressed to nobody. You have kept the lost property box at Gull Rock House for three summers, and this is the first thing that ever seemed to want answering. Mrs Pargeter runs the place from the top of Crescent Row with eleven rooms, a brass gong, and a firm rule about wet towels on the banister.

The elephant is drawn in a single unbroken line, the way a child draws when nobody has told them they may lift the pen. Its trunk curls up toward a leaf coloured in with the last green crayon in the tin. Someone wanted it to be carrying something small and bright. You turn the card over and find only a tide table for August and, in the margin, a shaky word: Bertie.

You ask the guests at breakfast. Mr Ashdown, who sells insurance in Leeds, says it looks like the sort of thing his late sister used to doodle on the edges of his bills. The Dutch couple say nothing and pass the marmalade. On the fourth morning a boy of about seven comes down the stairs holding his mother's hand and stops on the bottom step, staring at the card in your fingers.

'That's mine,' he says, and then, more quietly, 'I gave it to the lady in the blue hat. She said she'd post it to the sea.' You hand it over. He holds it up to the window so the light comes through the paper, and the leaf turns from green to something close to gold. Afterwards you write under lost property, in your neat hand: returned, to its owner. The rest is not a thing the ledger needs to know.
