Small elephant tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant facing right is outlined in thin black linework, with its back filled by a dense dark pattern. The tattoo sits on a bare lower leg against a blurred teal background, and the wearer's white canvas shoes are visible below. The ink is black with no colour, and the composition is close and centred on the ankle.

Sit closer, you lot, the wind off the moat has teeth tonight, and this old wall has heard this tale more times than I have told it. Up on the ridge above Caddon Keep there walked a small grey elephant called Mirrin, no bigger than a sheepdog, who belonged to no circus and no king. She came down the old drove road with a blanket of dark pattern across her back, whorled like frost on a window, and every mile of her journey had gone into it.

The lord of Caddon was a miller's son who had bought his title with a cartload of wool. He shut his gates against every traveller and kept a clerk who counted the bricks each morning and a dog that barked at its own shadow. When Mirrin came up the road in the rain, the clerk wrote her down as a stray and the lord laughed until he coughed into his sleeve.

She did not charge the gate. She stood in the mud, lifted her trunk, and laid it flat on the cold stones of the well. Then she turned her back to the lord so he could see the pattern running wet with rainwater. The lines of it were roads, and the clerk, peering over the wall, went pale, because he knew those roads. The river had broken its banks two valleys west, and the water was already in the lower bailey, floating his ledgers out through the postern.

The lord ran for the hill road with his dog and his coins. The clerk followed with the ledgers under his arm, still counting. Mirrin went last, slow and unhurried, and the keep's gate rusted shut behind her. Tomorrow, if you climb that ridge and look down at the mud, you will still find her footprints filling slowly with rain.
