A small tattoo of a cat's face sits on the side of an ankle, shown in profile against a striped fabric background. The cat is drawn in fine black linework with grey shading that suggests a tabby coat, and the left half of the design is filled solid black. The image is in black and grey with a clear, centred composition.

Morag Dunne climbed the ninety-two steps of Skerry Light with a tin of pilchards in one hand and a candle stub in the other, because the cat would not come down. The oil had run short when the supply boat failed to land in October, and the lamp had gone out at dusk, leaving the rocks to the dark and the gulls to their complaining.

The cat, Tibbs, sat on the iron rail of the gallery with her back to the sea. She did not turn when the door banged. Morag set the candle on the brass lip of the lens housing and held it up, and the flame showed the cat's face in two halves: the left side striped and bright, the right side swallowed in black shadow, as if someone had painted over it with a single stroke. Tibbs kept her eyes on the water.
Morag had kept the light for eleven years and had never once seen her look so hard. Out past the reef, a lantern bobbed where no lantern ought to be, low and steady, moving north against the tide. Morag understood then what the cat had been waiting for. She filled the reservoir with the last of the paraffin from the store cupboard, struck the wick, and turned the mechanism by hand until the great glass began to throw its beam across the water.
The lantern swung toward the light, then away, then back. By morning the boat was in Stromness harbour, and the crew were drinking to a cat. Morag gave Tibbs the pilchards. The cat ate one, then climbed back to the rail and sat with her black side to the sea, keeping watch over the half of the world that was dark.
