Small feather tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single feather is tattooed on the inner wrist, angled diagonally with its tip pointing down towards the palm side of the forearm. The feather is drawn in thin black linework with light shading along its barbs, giving it a soft, delicate look. The photograph is taken with the palm raised toward the camera, with a terracotta tiled surface and a potted plant blurred in the background.

Dear Nell,

We are nine weeks out of Valparaíso and the water has gone the colour of pewter, so flat in the mornings that you can see the sky lying under the hull. The cook swears the wind has died for good, but Captain Ormerod says it will come back before Tuesday, and he has never once been wrong about weather, only about people. I am enclosing the thing I found on the foremast yesterday. It had come loose from a gull that had been pecking at the salt beef, and it floated down past the bowsprit as if it had somewhere to be.

Keep it flat, Nell. It is a single grey primary, the kind with a stiff shaft that bends and springs back when you press it. The barbs have split a little at the tip, and when the light comes slantwise through the porthole it shows fine dark lines running down each side, as if someone had shaded it with a very sharp pencil. I have tucked it inside the cover of my logbook so the damp cannot get at it.

Mr Pell laughed when he saw me with it. He said a feather is no use on a voyage, since it cannot tell you which way the wind is blowing, and a compass can. But I have decided it is the one thing aboard that always points the right way, towards whatever is behind us. You would like it, I think. You always did have a soft spot for things that were never meant to stay still.

The wind came back at four this morning. I felt it before anyone shouted, a pull on the canvas like a held breath let go. Write back to Dover, care of the agent, and tell me the apple tree has fruited.

Yours, Tom
