Small feather on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather is tattooed on the inner wrist, angled upward along the forearm. The linework is fine and dark, with short strokes that suggest the barbs and central shaft of the feather. The ink is black on pale skin, and the background is a blurred terracotta floor with a potted plant.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

There was once a tower block called Harrow Point, twenty-two floors high, where the wind came up the concrete at night and went looking for the lift shafts. The people who lived there said it sang. In the year the scaffolding came down, a boy named Dev Halloran found a single feather wedged in the gap of the ninth-floor walkway, long and dark, its quill still soft at the root.

His grandmother told him what it meant. A feather kept from the high walkways would bring a person back down safely, whatever stairs they had climbed. So Dev carried it in his coat pocket to school and back, to the corner shop, to the bus stop where the number 41 never came. He never lost his way, and the others on the estate began to say that Dev always found his home, even in the fog that swallowed the car park.

When the council sealed the stairwells that November, Dev's cousin Ruth got lost in the fog, halfway between the bins and the lift that was still switched off. Dev went out with the feather in his fist. He did not call for her. He stood at the foot of the stairs and let the wind run past him until he heard a cough somewhere above, and then he walked straight up through the dark without once putting a hand to the wall.

Ruth came down at dawn with her shoes in her hand. The feather was still in Dev's pocket, a little bent, and his grandmother said it had done what feathers do, which was carry a thing up and then let it go. Nobody on Harrow Point got lost on the stairs after that, and Dev kept the feather until he was old enough to have a wrist that stayed still.
