Small feather tattoo on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single feather is drawn in thin black linework on the side of a bare torso, just below the armpit. The shading is light, with a few fine strokes suggesting the feather's barbs and quill. The sunlit photograph shows the back and arm in the foreground, with the tattoo placed off-centre in the lower right of the frame.

On Skerrow the wind keeps its own calendar, and you learn to read it the way your grandmother read the tide tables. The ferry is already a grey smudge past the north rocks when you remember the feather in your coat pocket. You found it on the cliff path after the gale, snagged in the gorse where the fulmars nest, a single quill no longer than your little finger, its barbs as fine as pencil strokes.

Mrs Pascoe at the shop said it was a gull's, and old Tom said a petrel's, and you believed Tom because he had been ringing birds on the island for forty years and had never once been wrong about weather. You meant to give it back to the sea, or to the post box where people left things for the mainland. Instead you carried it all week, turning it in the lamplight of the bothy while the rain tapped at the window like someone who had lost their key.

Now the boat has rounded the point and the gulls are lifting off the slipway in a loose white hand. You take the quill out and hold it up against the wind, and it does what Tom said it would: it lifts, shivers, and then drifts out over the harbour wall to the water, where it rides for a moment like a small sail before the tide carries it home. You have nothing to write to the mainland except that the feather has gone on ahead, and that you will follow when the sea lies flat.
