Small fern on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small fern frond sits on the inner wrist, drawn with fine black linework and a short curved stem. The leaflets are shaded with fine, dense strokes that give the frond some depth. The plain background of grey and wood tones keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The fern had come off the bank above the reservoir that morning, and by the time Nell reached the Harvest Hop it was already going soft at the tips. She kept her hand closed around it in her coat pocket, the way she might hold a coin for luck. Inside, the band was tuning up on the stage, and the floor smelled of French chalk and wet umbrellas.

Walter was by the urn with two cups of tea he had not yet offered her. He had asked her three weeks ago, and she had said yes before he finished the sentence, then spent a week worrying that a man who could name every plant on the moor would expect her to know them too. She did not. She knew only that this one had a stem that bent like a question mark.
When the quickstep started he came across the boards with the cups still in his hands, and she laughed so hard she nearly dropped her gloves. Halfway through the second dance he set his tea on the piano lid and held out his palm for the frond. He turned it over in the light from the lamps and looked at it the way he looked at everything, as if it had been written in a language only he could read. "Lady fern," he said. "See how the leaflets are all shaded in, dense as pencil? Somebody with a steady hand drew this." Then he folded it into her dance card, between the foxtrot and the last waltz, and gave it back.
She walked home that night with the card held against her chest, and the stem was still bent when she pressed it flat in her mother's hymnal. Her mother asked what she had been dancing to. Nell said the waltz, which was true, though it was not what she had meant.
