Fine line botanical tattoo of a small sprig with two flower buds and leaves on the upper arm, shown against a white sleeve.

Small botanical sprig on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig with slender stems, two pointed leaves and two tiny flower buds or blooms, drawn in delicate single lines. The tattoo is in dark ink with light shading in the petals, and it sits alone in the centre of the frame against plain skin. The soft-focus background shows a green door and a white top, leaving the design as the clear focus.

The seed packet said the Welsh poppy would come up in May, but mine came up in March, pushed through the cracked step by the coal shed as if it had heard me complaining. I was hunting for my father's trowel when I found it, a thin green stem with two leaves like folded hands and a bud still wrapped tight. I did not know what it was. I pressed it between the pages of the seed catalogue he never threw away, and went back to clearing the bed where the gooseberries had died.

By June there were three of them, and then a fourth, each one leaning towards the kitchen window as though it wanted to be told what day it was. Mrs Okafor from number nine came over with her secateurs and said that sprig was a weed, and I said it could be a weed if it liked, and she laughed and stayed for tea. She knew the name. Mouse-ear, she called it, and then, more quietly, that my father used to bring her cuttings from the lane in a jam jar.

I cut the best bloom in August and took it to the florist on Harrow Road, who said a bunch like that would not last an hour in water. I told her I was not buying it. I wanted to see whether it would keep its shape once it was dry. It did. I have it now, flattened in the back of the catalogue, two leaves and a bud, exactly as small as the morning I first saw it, and I still do not know what it is called.
