Small fine-line geometric symbol on upper back
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
A small symbol made of straight lines forms a diamond shape with crossing strokes extending from its top and bottom corners. The linework is thin and even, in a single reddish-purple ink, with no shading. The tattoo sits near the centre of a plain, lightly lit area of skin, with a grey knitted garment along the lower edge of the frame.

Dear Tomas, the snow came down on Hollin Gap the night after you left, so I have had the mule and the boy digging the north cairn free since first light. The bottom stone had split clean through, and under it, where the frost had lifted the turf, I found the old mark cut into the rock: a diamond with a stroke crossing each corner, the way your grandmother drew it on the lintel at Brackenrigg.

I did what she always told us to do. I cleared the lichen with a wet rag, not a blade, and traced the grooves with my finger until I was sure they were true. Then I walked the pass down to the bothy and counted the posts. Eleven of them still carry the same sign, scratched small at head height, which means the track is sound on the far side as well as ours. Nobody living remembers who put them there. Hallam says it was a surveyor's joke, and his wife says it keeps the fog off the path.
Last night I sat under the lintel with the lamp and wondered which of them was right, then decided it did not matter. The marks have kept carts, wool and two lost children away from the drop at Cold Scar for longer than anyone has bothered to argue about them. I am sending a rubbing made with charcoal and tissue paper. Keep it in the drawer with the tide tables. When the melt comes, climb up and check the lower cairn yourself, and bring a chisel in case the frost has got there first. Your sister, Ines.
