Black cross on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A simple black cross, made of a longer horizontal line and a shorter vertical line, sits across the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is thin and clean, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin tone is warm and the background is a dark leather jacket sleeve, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bridge at Carrow Mill had three planks gone soft with rot, and everyone in the valley knew to step over the middle one. Old Mother Pym said the water beneath had taken a girl once, and that the only mark the river respected was a straight one, set down with a true hand. So when the Hollin boys came back from the city for the reunion at the schoolhouse, nobody thought it odd that Tamsin Greaves walked them out to the bridge at dusk with a stick of charcoal in her pocket.

She drew the cross on the bridge's end post, long bar lying across the short one, the way her grandmother had taught her to draw it on bread before it went in the oven. Her hand did not shake. The Hollin boys laughed at her, then stopped laughing, because the river below had gone quiet in a way that made the reeds lie flat.

They went back to the schoolhouse and ate their pie and told each other stories of who had married whom and who had gone to prison and who had gone rich. Nobody mentioned the bridge. In the morning the planks were sound, and the charcoal mark was still on the post, though it had turned the colour of ink and would not wash off with rain.
