Angular geometric line tattoo on a limb
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of connected angular lines forms a stepped, abstract shape with a square-like section and a long diagonal stroke. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the design sits alone in the centre of the frame against bare skin. The background shows a dark patterned blanket and yellow fabric, with soft, slightly dim lighting.

Mind the third step, that's where Evan Rhys lost a boot in the winter of nineteen eleven and never saw it again. Sit close to the range, the coal's good tonight. You want the tale of the stair cut into Moel Ddu before any of us were dreamed of. Men called it the Ladder, though it was no ladder, more a zigzag of cut rock that took the colliers from the lamp-room up to the bank: one step, a turn, then the long slant up the face where the light first came back.

My grandfather walked it every morning for forty-one years and never once looked at the sky until he reached the top. Said the sky would make you soft. Said the stone would tell you the truth if you let it. Then came the spring of the flood, when the lower drift filled overnight and fourteen men were stranded on the far side with water rising at their boots. Nobody could reach them by the main shaft. The overman stood at the top with a lamp and a cold pot of tea, and he said, Go by the Ladder. Every man there knew it was madness.
So a boy called Tomos Price, no more than sixteen, took a rope and went down counting the turns out loud, step, turn, slant, the way his grandfather had taught him to count his breath. He didn't look at the water. He looked at the marks the old hands had scratched into the rock at each corner, a square, a stair, a line running off. He brought them up one by one, and when the last was out the sky over the valley was the colour of a bruise going yellow.
They say the Ladder is still there under the grass, and that if you walk it counting you come out on the hill with your boots dry. I have walked it. The steps are shallower than you'd think and the turn at the top is sharper. Mind the third one, love. It's still waiting for that boot.
