Fine line bands and rectangle on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised arm with a hand held up against a white painted brick wall, showing black fine line tattoos. Three thin parallel lines wrap around the wrist, a single thin line encircles the forearm, and a rectangle outline sits lower on the arm near the edge of a knitted sleeve. The linework is simple and even, in black ink with no shading, and the plain background and wooden shelves keep the focus on the tattoos.

The novices called it the ruling hour, though it was only the stretch after Terce when the light came in flat across the scriptorium and showed every pricked hole in the vellum. Brother Osric had taught me to hold the lead point against the straightedge and draw without lifting, so the line ran out even as a held breath. He said a hand that wavered on a ruled line would waver on a psalm, and he said it so often that I stopped hearing it and only felt it.

The winter the Dale farms sent us their finest calfskin, I ruled forty leaves for the infirmary psalter. Each one carried a clean rectangle left empty for the illuminator, and I drew every frame three times before Osric would look. He ran his thumb along the border of the eleventh leaf and said nothing, which from him was praise. The cold came early that year, and the illuminator sent word from Ripon that the roads were shut, so the frames stayed bare on the shelf above the desk.
Osric died at the turn of spring with his pen still wet in the rack. I kept his straightedge, wrapped in undyed linen, and each morning I ruled three fine lines across the top of the day's sheet before I touched the calfskin, the way he had taught me to take a breath before a psalm.
The illuminator never came. The abbot sold the rest of the vellum to a bookbinder in York, but I kept back the eleventh leaf with its clean empty box. When the new scribe arrives I will hand it to him and let him decide what goes inside, since most of us spend our lives keeping the edges straight while someone else paints the picture.
