Striped animal tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A person sits on a bed in light blue denim and a cream knit jumper, with one leg bent and the foot visible. A dark black and grey tattoo of a striped animal head sits on the ankle, with bold shading and contrast against the skin. A white cup of tea sits on the pale bedsheet beside the leg, and the image is softly lit with a muted, neutral palette.

The tiger came down the pass the week the snow melted early, and the shepherd's daughter, Nerys, saw it first from the cairn where she had been counting goats. It walked the way water runs, low and without hurry, its stripes dark against the grey scree. The goats did not bolt. They stood in a line and watched it, as if it were a tax collector they had been expecting.

Her grandmother said tigers in the high country were a sign of a debt unpaid. Nobody in the valley had paid one in forty years, so nobody could say who owed. Nerys took a loaf, a flask of sour milk, and went up the path after it, because her brother was at the market in Llanfair and the goats were hers to answer for.
At the saddle of the pass the tiger stopped beside a wind-bent larch and lay down with its head on its forepaws. A thorn was caught deep in one pad. She knelt, though her knees shook, and worked it out with the point of her knife. The tiger did not move except to lift its eyes to hers, pale and patient, and when the thorn came free it stood, shook itself, and walked down the far side of the mountain without a backward look.
That evening the goats came home in a neat file, every one counted. Her grandmother sniffed the milk, poured the rest on the step, and said nothing at all. Nerys went to bed with the snow light coming through the shutters and found, pressed flat in her palm, a single striped hair of gold and black, which she kept in the tin with her mother's ring.
