Thin double band tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands wrapped around a dark green glazed ceramic cup, both wearing silver rings, with a chunky brown knit cardigan in the background. A fine line double band tattoo in black ink sits across one finger, with two thin parallel lines of even weight. The photograph uses soft, muted lighting and a shallow focus on the hands and cup, giving a calm, warm tone.

The kettle had gone cold twice before Nell remembered the cup she had left on the roof of the cabin to dry after the frost. She climbed out through the hatch in her father's brown cardigan, the one with the cuffs gone shiny, and found the glaze still chalky along the rim. Lock 14 was quiet. A heron stood on the lower gate like a man waiting for a bus.

Her father had mixed the green himself, copper and a little iron, from a biscuit tin of ground stone he kept under the bunk. He called it river colour. He never wrote the recipe down, so when the kiln cracked in February she had only the tin, a scorch mark on the stove, and the stubborn habit of testing one more pot.

Ferris from the boat moored behind came along the towpath with a bag of coal and asked whether she was still selling mugs. She said not really. He stood there turning a silver ring on his finger and looked at the cup in her hands the way people look at something they have been meaning to ask about for years. She gave it to him. The glaze ran thin along one side where it had been dipped too quickly, and he said that was the best bit.

Back inside, the stove ticked. She took the tin down and wrote the recipe on the back of a gas bill, every quantity guessed, then pinned it to the cupboard above the sink where the morning light from the lock would reach it. The cabin smelt of wet wool and iron. For the first time since February she made tea in a plain white mug and did not mind.
