Small black typewriter-style lettering reading werde, der du bist across the inner forearm, on a plastic-covered table.

Small German text on the forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small line of black text tattooed across the inner forearm, set in a typewriter-style serif font. The lettering is crisp and solid with even spacing, and the skin around it is slightly reddened. The plastic-covered surface and a rolled sleeve frame the arm against a soft, film-like background.

Hanne was nine when she asked why. Oda said the machine held a sentence the old world had pressed into its own ground, and that the sentence was the only thing worth keeping from it. She would not say it aloud. She let Hanne read it off the drum letter by letter, backwards, until the words sat right: Werde, der du bist.

Hanne did not know what it meant. Jorn, the miller's boy, who had wanted to be a sailor since he could walk, said it meant stay where you are. The ferrywoman said it meant pay your debts. They argued until the lamps went out. Hanne carried the strip home folded in her apron and read it in the dark, and she noticed that the words did not tell her what to become, only that she already was something and could stop pretending otherwise.

In spring she walked the marsh road to the coast and gave Jorn the strip. He read it twice, handed it back, and went down to the slipway without a word. By the next tide he had a boat half planked in the sand. The hull was crooked, and he was whistling.
