Small ghost dog character on skin
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of Zero, the ghost dog character from The Nightmare Before Christmas, shown in side profile with a floating outline and a dark eye and nose. The linework is fine and clean, with soft grey shading on the body and ears and a small yellow flame at the nose as the only colour. The design sits alone in the centre of the frame against freckled skin.

Morwen had kept the lamp at Carrick Hollin for forty winters, and in all that time the ghost hound had never once come to the gatehouse door. It came now, on the night the sea fog rolled up the scarp and swallowed the lower wall. Its body was a sheet of grey smoke with ears like folded sails, and at the end of its long nose burned a single yellow flame no bigger than a thumbnail.

"You're late," Morwen said, though she had not lit the tallow yet.
The hound sat, which seemed to cost it something, and tilted its head toward the sea. Out past the broken keep a fishing smack was circling the reef, its bell clanking in the fog. Morwen had heard that bell for three nights and had told herself it was the wind. She took the lantern down from its hook, the one with the cracked horn pane, and held it out. The flame on the hound's nose dipped toward the wick and caught it without a single spark.
They went down the cliff path together. The hound never touched the stones, yet it kept just ahead of her, glancing back with its dark eyes each time the path turned to scree. At the reef the smack was drifting in a slow circle, her sail hanging like a dropped cloak, and on the deck a boy of nine stood holding the bell rope with both hands.
Morwen waded out to her waist. When she reached the boy she lifted him onto her shoulders, the lantern light swung across the water, and the hound stood on the rocks, its small flame steady, until the last of the fog thinned into morning.
