Three-armed swirl on an upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three looping curls radiating from a central point, with a small open dot in the middle. The outlines are smooth and even, with solid black filling the tapered swirl shapes. The design is shown in close view on bare skin, with the curls filling most of the frame against a plain background.

You learn early that the three curls in the cold frame are not weeds, though they grow like them. Your grandmother Ysolde kneels in the wet bed beside the leeks and tells you to pinch nothing back. Let them run, she says, they know where the light is. You are nine and sulky and your knees are green. The spirals in the bean rows turn in the same direction as the wind off the canal, round and round the central stake where the little hollow of bare earth never fills with anything, however much compost you tip into it.

The summer your uncle sells the glasshouse, you come back with a notebook and a pencil and try to draw the thing properly. Every attempt closes too early. The third arm always wants to go one more turn than the paper allows. Ysolde watches you over her spectacles and says the trick is to stop counting the turns and start following the hand that makes them. You tell her that is nonsense. She laughs, the dry laugh that means she is right.
On the last afternoon, you cut one long tendril from the bindweed along the fence, the stubborn one nobody has ever been able to pull out, and you wind it three ways around your own wrist. It holds. It leaves a faint green print when you take it off, and you carry that print home across two counties, tracing it with your thumb in trains, until it fades on its own, which is the only way anything ever leaves that garden.
