Fine line sprig of tiny flowers on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black stem curves diagonally across the skin, branching into small clusters of tiny five-petalled flowers at its end. The linework is fine and solid black with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the pale skin. The design sits off-centre on the upper chest, with a white fabric edge at the left of the frame.

Mrs Okafor's lilies had gone brown by the time the Halcyon Bay cleared Tilbury, so when the purser sent down a bunch of gypsophila for the saloon tables, I took the stems off him myself. Nobody on a cargo ship expects flowers, and the boys in the messroom looked at me as though I had brought a bird aboard.

I set them in a jam jar on the galley sill, where the porthole threw light across the steel. Each morning the tiniest clusters seemed to have opened a little more, five petals to each flower, pale as sugar work. I stopped counting the days by the tins of corned beef and started counting them by the spray.

Second engineer Dai Pugh came to the hatch one evening, grease to his elbows, and asked whether I was sweet on the purser. I told him the flowers were for the table. He laughed and said the table had never once in eleven years held anything nice. I gave him the jar for the saloon and kept one sprig back, pressed flat inside my recipe book at the page for shortbread.

We berthed in Dublin three weeks later. The papers were signed and the hatches lowered, and when I opened the book on the quay, the flower had dried into the paper, its stem as fine and black as a pen stroke. I left it there. A galley cook learns to keep whatever fits in the gutter of a page.
