Small hamsa hand on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small hamsa hand is drawn in a single thin black outline, centred on the upper chest below the collarbone. The linework is clean and even, with the fingers and central palm shape defined by the outline alone and no shading. The rest of the frame shows bare skin against a plain, softly lit beige background.

It belonged to a man called Mr Dunmore, who came in with a chest infection and went out a fortnight later with his daughter's photograph tucked inside his gown pocket. He laughed, which set him coughing, which sent me reaching for the sats monitor.
The buzzer for bed four goes at half past. Mrs Adeyemi wants water and wants to know whether the car park lights are always that yellow. I tell her they are. She asks if I have anything to keep her from worrying about her son driving home in the dark. I have nothing, so I give her the hand. She closes her fingers over it as if it were warm from somebody else's pocket.
At handover I tell the day sister the lost property is sorted. It isn't, quite. But it is the first thing I have managed to pass on all month to someone who wanted it.
