The seed came folded in a letter from Aunt Ros, who had gone out to Kerala forty years before and never quite come back. Maud shook it onto her palm in the packing shed, a hard grey thing no bigger than a peppercorn, and read the rest of the letter twice. Nobody in Ledbury grew lotus. She sank it in the mill pond at the bottom of the orchard in the last week of August, when the Discovery apples were dropping faster than the pickers could gather them. Wasps drank from the windfalls. The water smelt of bruised fruit and clay. Every evening she walked down with a jam jar and checked for green, and every evening there was only duckweed and the pale reflection of the old cider press.

Then one morning in early September a single leaf lay flat on the surface, round as a coin, with a bud beside it the size of a thumbnail. She knelt in the wet grass with her sleeves pushed up and watched a drop of rain land in the middle of the leaf and roll off the edge without breaking. Two more drops followed, one above and one below, rings spreading across the pond until they reached the reeds.

She stayed until the bud opened. It lasted a single morning. Afterwards she climbed back up to the shed and wrote to Ros that it had worked, and then, because it felt like the truest thing she knew, she added that she had nearly not bothered to plant it at all.
